The process for this cabaret happened differently from my first two shows, “Crossing the Line” and “Shooting My Arrow”. As an artist, I wanted to approach my song choices organically, by listening to lyrics that I really found a connection to, and to take my time in choosing truthfully. In the past, I might have picked a song based on how it sounded, or if it had a “ringer” high note at the end, objectively picking the songs based on the notes or musical styling, rather than basing my selection on lyrics and content…I would get in my head too much as a singer.

My journey for this show is to find my voice. Nothing overly theatrical, just raw and earthy. With the help of Lennie Watts and Tracy Stark I think I have come up with a great selection of music. These are the songs that seem to speak volumes to me right now. Besides my one original song - which was written for my best friend Katherine - there isn’t one song on the set list that is a recurrence from my repertoire.

Some of the song writers you will hear during my third Cabaret show are; Sheryl Crow, Dave Frishberg, Curtis Mayfield, Shawn Colvin, Ann & Nancy Wilson, and Dar Williams, just to name a few.

And last but not least, I never do a show without one of their songs; The Indigo Girls!

Hopefully, you’ll enjoy the show and maybe even discover something new about me…and yourself.

Live & Learn!

~ Dawn

In May, 2008 I was part of a passionately talented cast and crew for The Gallery Players production of “MAN OF LA MANCHA” in which I played Alonso Quijana’s cunning neice, “Antonia”.
The production recieved rave reviews, and we all had a profoundly touching theatrical experience that will stay with us forever.
Please read some of reviews I recieved from both my Cabaret and Man of La Mancha.

SHOOTING MY ARROW
“Singer, songwriter, guitarist, actress and cruise-ship entertainer, Dawn Derow brought her diverse talents together in an energy-filled program– her cabaret debut – at The Duplex this winter.”
Peter Haas, Cabaret Scenes
Talking about “Shooting My Arrow”

“I had no idea of the scope of your talent –singer, songwriter, guitarist, story teller, world traveler!.. and per one photo in your press kit, a model for working out!”
Peter Haas of Cabaret Scenes email

“Behind her breathy intonation was a trained instrument, lending her performance a kind of relaxed, confident quality and bringing a personalized spin to all the songs in the line up.”
Laura Palotie of www.wordpress.com
Talking about “Shooting My Arrow”

MAN OF LA MANCHA

“As members of the household, which Alonso Quijana leaves behind, when he sets out to tilt at windmills as Don Quixote, sweet-voiced Dawn Derow, as his niece and heir, Antonia, and insist, hypocritically, “I’m Only Thinking of Him.”

Park Slope’s Gallery Players Offer a Magical “Man of LaMancha”
by Bruce-Michael Gelbert of Q Onstage.com

“Of the strong ensemble, some who stood out for me was Dawn Derow, especially in the three-part number, “I’m Only Thinking of Him.”

From nytheatre.com review by Debbie Hoodiman Beaudin
April 26, 2008

“Derow’s sweet soprano does well with the trio “I’m Only Thinking of Him…”
by Qwen Orel of the L Magazine
